End of ICE..

March 9th, 2008

Salam alaik~~

alast, the day i’ve been waiting for finally arrived…2 weeks of the Intensive Clinical Experience (ICE) had been an extremely tiring, yet memorable experience for me~~ fun it was,,,but i think i’ve had enough for now…i might come back for more tho…insyaAllah within a few years time~~p

the last 2 days were packed with new things for me..

day 3: i went down to the repiratory clinic this morning…had the office to myself and took medical histories from a few patients..dpt duduk kat kerusi doctor..hihik=p

that afternoon, i got a chance to see bronchoscopy…huhu..2 of them actually..em, 1st patient had a very bad cough and they wanted to see his bronchus if anything was wrong with it…2nd patient had a collapsed left lung so they wanted to check if it had been caused by any form of obstruction in the bronchus..

the 1st patient was a strong old man who was probably in his 60’s and was still quite fit u could say…so the doctors didnt have trouble doing his bronchoscopy…however, the 2nd patient was an 89 year old woman who had multiple diseases so they couldnt give her too much sedation to ease her pain..i felt sorry for her since she kept screaming in the room and she even cried cos she terribly felt the pain…i could almost feel it myself~~ i didnt think the doctor was of much help tho, she said to the patient "its ok, ur doing good"…as if that would relieve the pain that poor old woman was enduring~~
however, the nurse was much better since she offered her hand and told the old lady to hold it..i think that was muc muc more helpful..she’d know then that someone was there for her…n she stopped screaming after that=p

day 4 (the final day): this was actually the shortest day i’d had at the hospital..i went for ward rounds again in the morning and had feedback session in the afternoon..the ward rounds was interesting since the patients were…huhu~~p
i got a chance to take another medical history from a patient at the ward..it was the best history i got so far…die sakit everywhere in the body tapi the doctors are still searching for the correct diagnosis..i guess these things happen huh?!

nway, it was a great experience after all…i’ve learned so much! seriously! the exposure was essential as to reassure myself that i definitely want to be a doctor~~P

ala kulli hal, praise be to Allah alone for the oppurtunity given~~

hope u guys have had wonderful experiences as such too=p

With that, i officially declare the ending of my ICE entries too~~heheh

Till pen meets paper~~

Scrubs

March 5th, 2008

salam alaik~
it feels good to be doing medicine for a change..not to say that nursing wasnt fun..

i enjoyed it..BUT…medicine suits me MUC MUC better,,, i think?!
hmm..i’m attached to the respiratory ward this week…but instead of being treated like a nurse and doing what nurses do, i’m now being treated as a student doctor..and am able to do simple medical stuff like ward rounds, taking histories, SCRUBBING..etc…sounds fun huh?!=p

oh well, i might as well write about how the 1st 2 days went..so here goes:

day 1
i had a second induction session and met the fourth year students that i’m suppoesed to be shadowing this week..it means that i’ll be following them going around the wards and asking them questions if i feel the need to…and they also get to ask me questions and test my knowledge..how scary is that huh? thank God i’m a 1st year, so they wont expect me to know muc i guess..hee=p
anyway, i just went to see a few patients with the doctors, ask questions and thats it for the morning..
in the afternoon, i went to see patients by myself and took 2 medical histories from them- one had breast cancer and the other had pleural effusion (fluid in part of the lung)..but almost everyone i took a history from setakat ni mmg ade family history of cancer…i guess cancer is more common in the UK compared to malaysia aite? i wonder why? is it the food they eat? ke lifestlye? genetic? ade sape2 tau x?=p
hmm..tu je 1st day coz i started late~

day 2
i missed the tram pagi neh..aiyo! nsb baek train delayed jg..so didnt miss the train pulak..huu~alhamdulillah~
pagi ni sampai2 je ade induction to the surgery theatre…so they took us around the surgical rooms and tunjuk2 la mende2 kat citu skit…then i headed off to respiratory ward like yesterday…pagi ni pegi ekot doctor wat ward rounds mcm biase..(basically go from one patient to another kat dlm ward tuh)…check how they’re doing for the day, etc…but today, i came across a few interesting patients…huhu…but i’ll only tell you one…i’ll name her MRS. J
MRS. J: suffering from withdrawal symptoms…she’s trying to stop drinking alcohol so die ade symptom2 ni..its normal for org2 mcm ni but i’ve never seen one before..
so, as we reached her bed..tny die "how r u doing MRS. J?"…terus die nangis…pastu die kate org tu tgh marah die..die tunjuk kat ujung meja die..there was nobody pon..but she could see a man..tgh marah die..so die nangis..
pastu tiba2,, die calm down..pastu ok je..gelak2 pulak..doctor tu asked her questions to make sure die dlm dunia nyata aa..huhu..die tny her date of birth, what time it is, etc..ok je die jwb btol je..pastu, die nangis semula..hohoh..pastu jerit2..kesian sgt..mcm ade switch plak..on-of-on-of
i guess thats why dlm Islam, kt HARAM minum arak kan…teruk padahnye…!

ade lg patient2 len tp pjg sgt la nk cite…

ptg pulak…huuu…lg syok~~me dpt masuk surgery…pakei scrubs! huhu…bersempena ngn tu la letak tajuk entry kali ni..haih~
tgk operation buang sbhgn dari usus besar…canggih btol alat2 bedah kat cni…huhuk..i spent 4 stgh hours kat dlm tuh..heheh~~lame btol!
it was very interesting how they started off by making a hole kat perut tu pastu just put a tube with a camera in it…the procedure is called laparoscopic hemicolectomy..belit2 lidah me nk sebut..thats y i’d rather write it down je..uhuhu..salu tgk kat tv je so cam tadi jakun skit..hikhik=p
everything was on camera..pastu tgk la dgn jelas colon (usus besar) org tuh..i’d rather not tell you what i saw in details..it might not be pleasant to imagine pon~P
anyways, penat juge jd doc ni rupenye..tp i enjoyed every single bit of it…=p

ala kulli hal, sume pon bess..looking forward to tomoro…pi turun clinic pagi tuh..n apela agaknye suprise esok pula..hu~~

till pen meets paper~

wslm~
